The Challenge of the Coronavirus Crisis

Regenerate-RISE is very grateful to the 201 volunteers that have offered their services over the last 10 weeks and we want to say a big “thank you” to all those who have been available to deliver Supply Bags, Lunches and Expressions of Kindness as well as contact by telephone, do shopping, collect prescriptions and generally care about the welfare of older people across the borough. It has been a pleasure and a privilege for our staff to work alongside so many people willing to give up their time to serve the community.  We are also grateful to Waitrose, to Sainsburys, to AFC Wimbledon, to Hillsong, to Wandsworth Council and to all the individuals who have provided food donations or monetary gifts to enable us to provide the services.

Following some very uncertain times with the renting of the Platt Christian Centre in Putney, the Trustees have put in an offer to purchase the building in order that the services that we provide for older people will continue for years to come.  The world is a different place now to what it was 6 months ago and the Coronavirus has forced everyone to go into isolation and whilst supporting so many at home – we are now looking at what our service will look like when they can return to our Centres.  We are still planning to build our 10 bed Reablement Unit, although the purchase of the Platt Centre was not in the plan, but we are moving forward with the same enthusiasm and will look forward with hope and a determination to see it come to fruition.

If you would like to support Regenerate-RISE to continue work from the Platt Christian Centre in Felsham Road, please email us and if you would like to do a fundraising event to raise funds for us to continue our work from the Platt Centre, please let us know – we would love to hear from you.

If you would like to donate towards the work of Regenerate-RISE and specifically to the purchasing of the Platt Centre, please go to the link below:

Following the theft of our minibus, we are looking forward to using our new Dementia-friendly minibus in the future as we have adapted our bus with a screen informing members of the date, where they are going, what is for lunch along with photos of staff and this is very helpful to all those travelling on the bus.  We have birds and butterflies on the windows and the skylight as well as bright headrests, cushions and lights around the top.

RISE+

RISE SW11 closed on Friday 31 March after 6 years of working in partnership with St Michaels C of E Church and many years of funding from Wandsworth Council. For 2023 onwards Wandsworth decided to give RISE SW15 a Direct Award and put RISE SW11 out to tender.  The project became unviable for Regenerate-RISE and no other organisation was appointed to take it on.  We came to an agreement with the Council that RISE SW11 and RISE SW15 will merge together under one project at the Platt Mission in Putney and we will be transporting SW11 members by Dial-a-Ride as well as by our own transport.  We are very grateful for the years that we were in SW11 and are very sorry to be leaving.  Lisa will be overseeing RISE in Putney and all our staff, except one, will be staying with us.  We had a great celebration on Wednesday 22 March and a special event with the Church on the Friday.  We are grateful to Rev Tif Ewins for supporting us whilst at St Michael’s and we look forward to a new era in Putney, with a new Contract for 5 years and look forward to providing a greater service throughout the borough of Wandsworth.

Volunteers

We are grateful to the volunteers who have regularly helped and supported RISE SW11, grateful to the various companies that have given their staff to volunteer for a day with us.  We have also enjoyed the students from Emanuel School and the children from Thomas Clapham – it has been great getting to know everyone and we have appreciated it so much.

It has been a time in history that we will never forget and although life moves on, we will never forget those we lost during Covid or the following months and we will be forever grateful for the opportunity to make a difference to so many lives.

As the service is not meeting in our Centres, we are unable to carry out outings as such.  However, on 29 May we did a concert on the Green of the Lennox Estate in the heart of the sheltered houses and we were joined by Songs on Wheels for a great sing song.

We also gave out 38 Expressions of Kindness gifts, they were toiletries and freshly made scones with jam.

We think the singing and the sunshine along with the gifts raised the moods of those watching and it was a very enjoyable day.

This year we are going by coach to Eastbourne in July, which has been funded with a grant from Esso and we are looking forward to a great day out.

Kings and Queens will be held on 1 September 2018 in the Marquee on the Green in Danebury Avenue.  Free tickets are available from Regenerate-RISE, The Platt Centre, 22 Felsham Road, SW15 1DA.  We are looking forward to a great afternoon.

Kings and Queens 2020

Unfortunately, we will not be able to hold our Kings and Queens on The Green in Roehampton this year, but we will see what else we can do to celebrate the fact that we have so many kings and queens living in our communities.

If everyone had Ipads, computers or Iphones, we could produce a virtual Kings and Queens – but the majority of older people do not own these and are still reliant on the telephone system.   So we cannot do You Tube, not everybody has a DVD player and they are certainly not on social media.

So we have to think creatively and we will let you know what we think of.  So watch this space.  Just as a reminder of Kings and Queens past, here are a few photos
